Skip bin hire hidden costs: 5 things to ask before you book

The five questions that uncover hidden costs in any skip bin quote: what's included, hire period, permits, banned items and choosing the right size.

The hidden costs of skip bin hire usually come from five places: what the price leaves out, how long the bin can stay, the council permit, what you’re not allowed to put in, and booking a bin that’s too small. Ask about each one before you book and you’ll know exactly what you’re paying for. Below are the five questions we suggest asking any skip bin company, including us, and what a clear answer sounds like.

01Where the hidden costs of skip bin hire come from

Two quotes can look similar and still cover very different things. One might include delivery, collection and disposal. Another might quote the bin and leave the rest for later. One might assume a few days of hire, another a week or more.

The fix isn’t to hunt for the lowest number. It’s to make every quote answer the same questions, so you’re comparing like with like. These five questions do that.

02What does the price include?

This is the first question for a reason. A skip bin job has three parts: getting the bin to you, taking it away, and paying the facility that accepts the waste. If any of those sit outside the quote, the final bill will be higher than the number you were given.

A clear answer names all three. At Bloom Skip Bins, our quote is one full price upfront that covers delivery, pickup and disposal. There are no hidden fees. The only thing that can be added later is a council permit, and only if the bin has to sit on council land (more on that below).

Tip

Ask the company to confirm in writing what the price covers. A quote that lists delivery, collection and disposal is much easier to compare than a single number.

Need a skip bin?

Tell us the job and we'll match the bin.

One full price upfront, covering delivery, pickup and disposal. Six sizes from 2m³ to 10m³ across Melbourne's west and north.

03How long can I keep the bin, and what if I need longer?

Hire periods vary between companies, so don’t assume. A clean-out that runs over a weekend, or a renovation where the tiler is a few days late, can push you past the period you booked.

Ask three things: how long the quoted price covers, what happens if you need the bin for longer, and whether the bin can be collected early if you finish ahead of time.

With us, you tell us how long you need the bin when you book, and that hire period is included in your quote. If you need it longer, ask and we’ll arrange it. If you finish early, call us and we’ll collect it sooner, so the bin isn’t sitting on your driveway for no reason.

04Do I need a council permit, and who pays for it?

Permits catch a lot of people out, because they depend on where the bin goes rather than on the bin itself.

Where the bin sits Council permit?
Your driveway No
Front yard or side access on your own land No
Nature strip (where the council allows it) Yes
On the road Yes

If the bin can go on your property, there’s nothing to arrange and nothing extra to pay. If it has to go on the nature strip or road, the council needs a permit first. Ask the company who applies for it, and how the cost is charged.

We lodge the permit for you as part of the booking, and we’re accredited with every council in our service area. The permit cost depends on the council, where the bin sits and how long it stays there, and it’s added to your final invoice. You can read how one council handles it in our Wyndham skip bin permit guide, and the wider rules in skip bin regulations in Melbourne.

05What can’t go in, and how is heavy waste handled?

Some items can’t go in a skip bin at all, and putting them in can cause problems after collection. Ask for the list before you start loading, not after.

The items that can’t go in a skip bin include:

  • Asbestos
  • Chemicals, paint and liquids
  • Gas bottles
  • Batteries
  • Electronics and e-waste: anything with a plug, battery or power cord
  • Food waste, medical waste and sharps

Our guide to what can’t go in a skip bin explains where to take each of these instead. Paint goes to Paintback, and household chemicals go to a Detox Your Home collection.

Two more things worth asking. First, do mattresses cost extra? With us they go in at no extra charge. Second, how is heavy waste handled? Soil, bricks, concrete and tiles weigh far more than furniture or garden waste, so tell the company up front. When you book with us, call first if you have heavy waste, and we’ll send the right bin for it.

06Which size do I actually need?

A bin that’s too small is one of the most common hidden costs of skip bin hire. If the waste doesn’t fit, you’re left with a pile on the driveway and a second booking. A bin that’s far too big means paying for space you don’t use.

Ask the company to help you choose based on the job, not just the volume. Here’s a quick guide to our six sizes, measured in standard 240-litre wheelie bins:

Size Holds about Typical job
2m³ mini skip 8 wheelie bins One room or a small garden tidy
3m³ 12 wheelie bins Garage clear-out
4m³ 16 wheelie bins Bathroom renovation or shed clear-out
6m³ 25 wheelie bins Whole-house clean-out
8m³ 33 wheelie bins Kitchen renovation or bulky furniture
10m³ 41 wheelie bins Building sites and big renovations

Every bin from 3m³ up has a walk-in door, so you can wheel a barrow straight in. That makes it easier to load the back of the bin properly, which means more fits. Our guide on how to load a skip bin shows how to pack it layer by layer. For all the measurements, see skip bin sizes.

07Your skip bin quote checklist

Before you say yes to any quote, run through this list:

  1. The price includes delivery, collection and disposal.
  2. You know how long the bin can stay, and what happens if you need it longer or finish early.
  3. You know whether you need a council permit, who lodges it and how it’s charged.
  4. You have the list of items that can’t go in, and you’ve mentioned any heavy waste or mattresses.
  5. The size suits the job, and you know how full you can fill it. Keep the load level with the top of the bin so it can be collected safely.

If every answer is clear, there’s nothing left to be hidden.
