What can’t go in a skip bin in Victoria (and where it goes)

The items you can't put in a skip bin in Victoria, why each one is banned, and the free programs and drop-off points that take them instead.

So, what can’t go in a skip bin in Victoria? Asbestos, chemicals, paint, liquids, gas bottles, batteries, e-waste (anything with a plug, battery or power cord), food waste, and medical waste and sharps. Everything else from a typical clean-out or renovation usually can. This guide explains why each item is banned and where to take it instead.

If you just want to check a single item, our What Can Go in a Skip Bin item checker gives a quick yes or no. This post goes a step further and gives you somewhere to take the things that can’t go in.

01Why some items can’t go in a skip bin

Full skips go to licensed recycling and disposal facilities. Those facilities are set up for general household, garden, renovation and commercial waste, not for things that leak, react, catch fire or carry a health risk.

Some items are also restricted by law. In Victoria, e-waste has been banned from landfill since 1 July 2019, so it can’t be tipped with general waste. Others, like paint and household chemicals, have free recycling programs built for them.

Putting a banned item in a skip can mean the load has to be sorted again or turned away. It’s simpler for everyone to separate these items before you start filling the bin.

02What can’t go in a skip bin: the full list

Here is each banned item, the reason it’s excluded and the best place to take it.

Item Why it can’t go in Where to take it
E-waste (anything with a plug, battery or power cord) Illegal in household rubbish or landfill in Victoria Council e-waste drop-off; find one via Recycling Near You
Batteries Fire risk and banned as e-waste B-cycle drop-off points (loose household batteries)
Paint Liquid and chemical content Paintback collection sites, free
Household chemicals Can leak or react with other waste Detox Your Home events, free
Gas bottles Pressurised and a fire risk A council drop-off that accepts gas cylinders
Liquids (including motor oil) Leak through the load Council drop-off that accepts the liquid, or Detox Your Home for chemicals
Asbestos Serious health risk when disturbed Ask your council about safe handling and disposal
Food waste Rots and attracts pests Your household bins
Medical waste and sharps Infection and injury risk Ask your council about sharps disposal

E-waste and electronics

The Victorian Government says that since 2019, it has been illegal to put e-waste in household rubbish or landfill in Victoria. E-waste is any item with a plug, battery or power cord. That includes TVs, computers, phones, kitchen appliances, white goods, battery toys and e-cigarettes.

Watch for items with hidden batteries too. Sustainability Victoria lists vapes, e-scooters and smartwatches among them. These can’t go in any household or kerbside bin either.

To find a drop-off point, use Planet Ark’s Recycling Near You or the RecycleMate app linked from Sustainability Victoria’s e-waste page. Old phones, chargers and accessories can go to MobileMuster for free.

Batteries

Loose household batteries can be recycled for free through B-cycle. Note that B-cycle is for loose batteries, not batteries built into devices and not vape batteries. Those go with e-waste.

Paint

Paintback takes unwanted paint for free, up to 100 litres per visit, in containers up to 20 litres. Use their locator to find the nearest site. Empty, dry tins are a separate question, so check the item checker or ask us.

Household chemicals and liquids

Pool chemicals, solvents, garden sprays and similar products can go to a free Detox Your Home event. Keep them in their original containers and don’t mix them.

Some council drop-off centres also take items like motor oil and gas cylinders. For example, the Brimbank Resource Recovery Centre in Keilor lists free drop-off for batteries, motor oil, gas cylinders, e-waste and paint tins. Check your own council’s page for what its centre accepts.

Asbestos

Asbestos can’t go in any skip bin. If you suspect a material contains asbestos, don’t break, cut or move it. Contact your council for advice on safe handling and disposal in your area before you start work.

Food waste, medical waste and sharps

Food scraps belong in your household bins, not a skip bin. Medical waste and sharps carry an injury and infection risk for anyone handling the load, so ask your council how to dispose of them safely.

Watch for

Fridges, freezers and air conditioners count as e-waste because they have a plug. They need separate handling, so keep them out of the skip.

One full price upfront, covering delivery, pickup and disposal. Six sizes from 2m³ to 10m³ across Melbourne's west and north.

03What you can put in a skip instead

The banned list is short compared with what’s allowed. Most household, garden, renovation and commercial waste is fine, including:

  • Furniture and mattresses (mattresses go in at no extra charge)
  • Cardboard and general household clutter
  • Green waste such as branches, prunings and lawn clippings
  • Timber
  • Bricks, concrete and tiles

Heavy waste like soil, bricks, concrete and tiles needs the right bin, so call us first and we’ll send a suitable size. Renovation jobs often suit our construction skip bins.

04How to sort your waste before the bin arrives

A little sorting up front saves trouble on collection day. Here’s a simple order to work in:

  1. Walk through the space and pull out anything with a plug, battery or power cord.
  2. Set aside paint, chemicals, gas bottles and any liquids in a safe, dry spot.
  3. Look for vapes, toys, tools and gadgets with hidden batteries.
  4. Book drop-offs or check event dates for the items you’ve set aside.
  5. Fill the skip with everything else, heavy items first.

If you’re unsure about an item, check the item checker or our FAQ before it goes in. Program rules, accepted items and opening times can change, so check the program or council page before you head out.

05Book a skip for everything else

Once the banned items are sorted, the rest can go in one bin. We quote one full price upfront covering delivery, pickup and disposal, and we arrange a council permit if the bin needs to sit on the nature strip or road.

Tell us what you’re clearing and how long you need the bin, and get a quote for the right skip size. You can also call us on 0411 131 044, Monday to Saturday, 7am to 5pm.
