A council hard rubbish collection suits a modest load of household items like old furniture and whitegoods, and you’re happy to wait for a booked date. A skip bin suits renovation waste, bigger volumes or a set timeframe. Council collections are booked, limited in volume and exclude building and renovation waste, so the right choice depends on what you’re clearing and how soon.
Below we compare the two, list the hard rubbish rules for each council in Melbourne’s west and north, and cover the council tips and transfer stations.
01Hard rubbish collection vs skip bin: the short answer
Here’s how the two options usually compare.
| Council hard rubbish collection | Skip bin | |
|---|---|---|
| Booking | Booked with council; you wait for a collection date | Booked for the date and length of hire you choose |
| Volume | Capped per collection | Choose a size from 2m³ to 10m³ |
| Building and renovation waste | Excluded | Accepted, including bricks, concrete, tiles and timber |
| Where the waste sits | On your property, ready for collection | In the bin, on your property or on council land with a permit |
| Cost | Free allowances, then fees may apply | One upfront price covering delivery, pickup and disposal |
02When a hard rubbish collection makes sense
A council collection is a good fit when:
- You’re clearing household items such as furniture, mattresses or appliances
- The load fits within your council’s volume limit
- You still have a free collection left this year
- You can wait for the next available date
Each council sets its own accepted items and limits, so check your council’s page before you put anything out.

One full price upfront, covering delivery, pickup and disposal. Six sizes from 2m³ to 10m³ across Melbourne's west and north.
03When a skip bin is the better choice
A skip makes more sense when your waste falls outside council rules or your timing is fixed. For example:
- Renovation waste like bricks, concrete, tiles, rubble or timber
- A larger clean-out that would go over a council’s volume cap
- Mixed household and garden waste you want gone in one go
- A deadline, such as moving house or finishing a renovation
You tell us how long you need the bin when booking, and that period is included in the quote. See our service areas to check we cover your suburb.

Hard rubbish collection Brimbank
Brimbank calls its service a Hard Waste Collection. A 2021 council news item says it’s booked, with one free collection per financial year. Waste goes inside your property boundary, on the front yard or driveway, by the Sunday before your collection week. Check the council page for current details. This covers suburbs like Sunshine, St Albans and Deer Park.
Hard rubbish collection Melton
Melton’s hard waste collection accepts appliances and whitegoods, furniture, mattresses, metal, e-waste with batteries removed, size-limited branches, timber and stumps, glass, mirrors, ceramics and up to four tyres. Items over 1.5 m, or too heavy for two people to lift, are excluded.
Hard rubbish collection Wyndham
Wyndham runs a combined hard and green waste collection. It takes furniture, up to two mattresses, whitegoods, electrical appliances, scrap metal, hard plastics, limited timber, cardboard, empty paint tins and tied green waste. This applies to suburbs like Werribee, Point Cook and Tarneit.
Hard rubbish collection Hume
Hume accepts furniture, mattresses, whitegoods, air conditioners, electronics, tyres with rims removed, scrap metal, tools, and bundled carpet and timber within size and weight limits. Garden waste is booked separately.
Hard rubbish collection Whittlesea
Whittlesea asks residents to allow up to four weeks for a collection date. It accepts furniture, mattresses, toys, limited timber offcuts and wrapped glass.
05Council tips and transfer stations
If you’d rather drop items off yourself, most councils run a tip or resource recovery centre. Check opening hours, accepted items and fees on the council page before you go.
Rubbish tip Werribee
Wyndham’s Refuse Disposal Facility at 470 Wests Road, Werribee accepts household and hard waste, and takes tip tokens. E-waste is free. For whitegoods, check current fees.
Melton tip
The Melton Recycling Facility is at 33 Ferris Road, Cobblebank. E-waste is free at the Recycle Centre, and fridges and freezers with doors removed are accepted at the Transfer Station. Residents get two visits a year with loads up to 1 m³ as part of their waste entitlements.
Brimbank, Hume, Whittlesea and Mitchell
- Brimbank: the Brimbank Resource Recovery Centre, Stadium Drive, Keilor, takes items like batteries, e-waste, small appliances and paint tins for free. It does not take white goods, carpet, or household or commercial waste.
- Hume: the Bolinda Road and Sunbury resource recovery centres take hard waste (vouchers usable), plus e-waste and large appliances at no charge.
- Whittlesea: the council doesn’t run its own transfer station. Residents get disposal vouchers for private facilities.
- Mitchell Shire: the council runs resource recovery centres, including at Wallan. Check the council website for details.
You can use both. Put whitegoods and e-waste out for a council collection or drop-off, and hire a skip for the renovation waste council won’t take.
06What a skip bin can and can’t take
A skip takes most household, garden, renovation and commercial waste, including furniture, mattresses, green waste, bricks, concrete, tiles and timber. It can’t take e-waste, batteries, paint, chemicals, gas bottles or asbestos. Check our What Can Go in a Skip Bin page for the full list.
07Get a skip bin quote
If your waste is too big, too heavy or not allowed in a council collection, a skip is the simpler option. We quote one full price upfront covering delivery, pickup and disposal, and arrange any council permit for you.
