You need a skip bin permit in Wyndham only when the bin sits on council land, which means the nature strip or the road outside your home. If the bin goes on your driveway or anywhere else inside your property line, no permit is needed. When one is needed, Wyndham City Council issues it to the company that owns the bin, so when you hire from us, we lodge it as part of your booking.
Below we explain how the skip bin permit in Wyndham works, what the council asks of every roadside bin, and what you can do to keep your bin off council land in the first place.
01Do you need a skip bin permit in Wyndham?
The answer comes down to one question: where will the bin sit? Wyndham’s page for residents on skips, bins and shipping containers and its business permit page both draw the line at council land. A bin on a nature strip or road needs a permit. A bin on private land does not.
| Where the bin sits | Permit needed? | Who arranges it |
|---|---|---|
| Your driveway | No | Nothing to arrange |
| Front yard, side access or backyard on your own land | No | Nothing to arrange |
| Nature strip | Yes | We lodge it with Wyndham City Council |
| On the road | Yes | We lodge it with Wyndham City Council |
That is why we always ask about the driveway first. On most jobs in Tarneit, Hoppers Crossing and Werribee, the bin can sit on private land and the permit question never comes up.
02What Wyndham calls the permit and who applies
Wyndham lists it as a “Trade waste, hopper or skip bin permit”. It is a local law permit, and it sits under the council’s permits for businesses rather than its permits for residents.
That placement tells you something useful. The council says the permit is applied for by “the person or business that owns the bin”. In practice, that is the skip bin company, not the person hiring the bin. You don’t need to fill in a council form, pay the council directly or chase anyone for paperwork.
When you book with us and the bin has to go on the nature strip or road, we lodge the Wyndham permit as part of your booking. We are accredited with every council in our service area, Wyndham included. The permit cost varies by council, placement and permit length, and it is added to your final invoice. It is the only thing that can be added to the price we quote you upfront.
Wyndham shows its current permit fee on its trade waste, hopper or skip bin permit page. Check there if you want to see it before booking.
Tell us the job and we'll match the bin.
One full price upfront, covering delivery, pickup and disposal. Six sizes from 2m³ to 10m³ across Melbourne's west and north.
03The council’s conditions for a roadside bin
A permit is not just a fee. Wyndham attaches conditions to every bin placed on a nature strip or road. According to the council’s permit page, these include:
- Reflective material on the bin, plus the company’s name and phone number displayed on it.
- Yellow retro-reflective tape.
- Yellow flashing lights between sunset and sunrise when Council requires them.
- Set distances from intersections, school crossings, pedestrian crossings, bus stops and railway crossings.
- The bin must not block driveways, footpaths or access to utilities.
- Reasonable access to private driveways must be maintained.
- The bin owner must hold public liability insurance.
Most of these are our job as the bin owner. The marking, the tape, the lights and the insurance all sit with us. Where you come in is the location. If your house is close to a corner, a school crossing or a bus stop, tell us when you book so we can work out a compliant spot.
Need the bin longer?
Wyndham notes that permit extensions can be requested. If your job runs over, call us on 0411 131 044 and tell us how much longer you need. We can extend the hire on request and sort out the permit side with the council.
04Wyndham suburbs we cover, and the Truganina boundary
Our depot is on Greigs Road in Truganina, so Wyndham is home ground for us. The Wyndham suburbs in our service area are:
- Truganina (partly Wyndham, partly Melton)
- Tarneit
- Point Cook
- Hoppers Crossing
- Werribee
Truganina is the one to watch. Part of the suburb falls under Wyndham City Council and part falls under Melton City Council. If your bin needs to go on the nature strip or road, the permit has to come from whichever council looks after your street. You don’t need to work that out. Give us your address and we will lodge with the right council.
05Placement tips to avoid a permit altogether
The simplest way to skip the permit is to keep the bin on your own land. Every one of our bins is about 1.5 m wide, and lengths run from 1.8 m for the 2m³ mini skip to 4.5 m for the 10m³. Full dimensions are on our skip bin sizes page.
Before you book, take a quick look at the front of your property:
- Measure the driveway. Check its width and length against the bin size you are considering. Leave room to open the walk-in door on bins from 3m³ up.
- Move the cars. Decide where your vehicles will park while the bin is there, so you are not tempted to shift it onto the nature strip later.
- Tell us about gates, carports and overhead wires. These all affect where the truck can set the bin down. A quick mention on the phone saves a wasted trip.
- Keep access clear. Even on private land, make sure the bin doesn’t block a neighbour’s driveway, a shared access path or meters.
Whether you are in Point Cook, Tarneit or Werribee, the same rule applies: if your driveway is tight, a smaller bin on private land can be a better choice than a bigger one on the nature strip. If you’re not sure which size fits, describe the space to us when you call.
06What to check before the bin arrives
If your bin does need to go on council land, a few checks make the day go smoothly:
- Tell us exactly where you want the bin to sit, and mention anything nearby like a corner, school crossing or bus stop.
- Clear the nature strip of cars, bins and anything else in the way.
- Make sure the bin won’t block your neighbour’s driveway, the footpath or access to utility pits.
- Let us know your hire length when you book, so the permit matches the time you need.
- Check the list of what can go in a skip bin, so nothing gets left on the kerb afterwards.
