How much skip bin hire costs in Melbourne depends on six things: the bin size, the type of waste, how heavy the load is, your suburb, how long you keep the bin, and whether it needs a council permit. Because those change from job to job, a single price list rarely matches what you’ll actually pay. The most reliable way to know the cost of skip bin hire is a quote that covers delivery, pickup and disposal in one price. Here’s how each factor affects the price, and how to keep your skip bin hire cost down.
01Why skip bin prices vary so much
Two jobs that need the same bin can still cost different amounts. A garage full of old furniture and a garden full of broken concrete may both fill a 4m³ bin, but they’re handled very differently once the bin leaves your driveway.
That’s why we don’t publish a price list. Instead, we ask a few questions about your job and give you one full price upfront. Knowing what goes into that price helps you give the right details, and spot where you can save.
02The six things that set the cost of skip bin hire
Bin size
The bigger the bin, the more it costs to move and to fill. Our bins range from the 2m³ mini skip to the 10m³. Choosing the right size is the biggest single decision you’ll make on cost (more on that below).
Type of waste
General household waste, green waste and heavy building waste are handled differently at the facility. If your load is all garden waste, a green waste skip bin may suit the job. If it’s mixed, tell us what’s in it. Our guide to what can go in a skip bin covers each waste type.
How heavy the load is
Soil, bricks, concrete and tiles weigh far more than furniture or garden waste, even when they take up less room. If you have heavy waste, call us first and we’ll send the right bin for it.
Your suburb
Delivery distance matters. Our depot is on Greigs Road in Truganina, and we deliver across 34 suburbs in Melbourne’s west and north, from Werribee and Melton to Craigieburn and Preston. Same-day delivery is available in many suburbs.
How long you keep the bin
Tell us how long you need the bin when you book, and that hire period is included in your quote. Need it longer? Ask, and we’ll arrange it. Finish early? Call us and we’ll collect it sooner.
A council permit, if needed
A bin on your driveway or property needs no permit. A bin on the nature strip or road needs one from the council. We lodge it for you, and the permit cost, which varies by council, placement and permit length, is added to your final invoice. It’s the only thing that can be added to the price we quote. 03Skip bin sizes and what they suit
Getting the size right does more for your skip bin hire cost than anything else. Too small, and you’ll need a second bin. Too big, and you’re paying for space you don’t fill. This table uses standard 240-litre wheelie bins as a guide.
| Size | Dimensions (L × W × H) | Holds about | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2m³ mini skip | 1.8 × 1.5 × 0.9 m | 8 wheelie bins | One room or a small garden tidy |
| 3m³ | 2.4 × 1.5 × 0.97 m | 12 wheelie bins | Garage clear-out |
| 4m³ | 3.2 × 1.5 × 0.96 m | 16 wheelie bins | Bathroom renovation, shed clear-out |
| 6m³ | 3.3 × 1.5 × 1.5 m | 25 wheelie bins | Whole-house clean-out |
| 8m³ | 3.3 × 1.5 × 1.8 m | 33 wheelie bins | Kitchen renovation, bulky furniture |
| 10m³ | 4.5 × 1.5 × 1.5 m | 41 wheelie bins | Building sites, big renovations |
Every bin from 3m³ up has a walk-in door, so heavy or awkward items can be wheeled in rather than lifted. For a renovation, our guide on what size skip bin you need for a renovation goes room by room. You can also compare every size on our skip bin sizes page.
The 6m³ and 8m³ bins take up the same space on your driveway. The 8m³ is taller, so it holds more without needing more room.
04What should be included in the price
When you compare skip bin hire prices, check that each quote covers the same things. Ours is one full price upfront that includes:
- Delivery of the bin to your property
- The hire period you asked for
- Pickup when you’re done
- Disposal at licensed recycling and disposal facilities
Mattresses go in at no extra charge. The only possible addition is a council permit, and we tell you about it before you book. For the questions worth asking any company, see skip bin hire hidden costs: 5 things to ask before you book.
05How to keep your skip bin hire cost down
- Put the bin on your property if you can. A driveway placement means no council permit.
- Pick the size for the job. If you’re torn between two sizes, tell us what you’re throwing out and we’ll help you choose.
- Sort your waste first. Keep heavy waste and garden waste apart if you can, and take out anything that can’t go in.
- Break things down. Take furniture apart, flatten boxes and cut long timber. Our guide on how to load a skip bin shows how to fit more in.
- Book for the time you need. If you finish early, call us for an early collection.
- Donate or sell what’s still good. Less waste can mean a smaller bin.
